Düsseldorf Cultural Activities
Altstadt (Old Town)
Narrow lanes and old churches, quaint breweries and ancient pubs, hip bars and clubs, good old French fries and exquisite food: this is Düsseldorf’s Alstadt, the old town.
Alter Golzheimer Friedhof (Cemetery)
Alter Golzheimer Friedhof, now a poetic oasis of silence and one of the country's most beautiful and important cemeteries, is tightly connected with Düsseldorf’s history. It is a unique example of different styles such as Baroque, Classicism, Neo-Gothic and Romanticism and a remarkable total work of art.
Tombs of famous people: the garden architect and creator of the cemetery Maximilian Weyhe, the painter Alfred Rethel, the architect Wilhelm von Schadow and the theatre director Karl Leberecht Immermann.
North Rhine-Westphalian State Parliament
In 1946, Düsseldorf was elected the state capital of the newly founded federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Until 1988, the state parliament met at the Ständehaus on Schwanenspiegel.
MediaHarbour
Famous architects such as Frank O. Gehry, David Chipperfield, Joe Coenen, Steven Holl and Claude Vasconi have made the MediaHarbour a meeting point for connoisseurs of architecture from all over the world.
The panorama restaurant at the top of the Rhine Tower, at 172 m height, affords an ideal view of the city and the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia at its foot.
Next to it is Düsseldorf's new landmark, the Stadttor (city gate), which was awarded a prize as 'Europe's best office building' and is also the seat of the State Chancellery
